More About Your Host
Amber Singleton Riviere
My primary goal for my work is to help small business owners and entrepreneurs. I have a few pieces to that puzzle, which at this point are:
One, I have this radio show, Rock Your Genius, and I also do writing for places like Web Worker Daily, so that whole piece is really about providing content and valuable information to business owners.
The second piece is Upstart Smart, which is also a resource for small business owners and entrepreneurs. Within Upstart Smart, there's a magazine, a podcast, as well as a growing list of products and services that are geared toward providing information to small business owners and entrepreneurs to help them run their businesses better.
And finally, I have the Give Back Project, which provides web design and marketing services for small business owners. The mission of that site changed with the start of 2010. Now, with every website we build, we hope to accomplish two things. First, we help our clients create websites that help them reach their goals. But, the second part is, over the course of this year and in coming years, I hope to provide opportunity to other people who want to be self-reliant and independent and who want to accomplish that through business ownership, so we're going to be launching an apprentice program, where we'll begin training low-income and harder-to-employ people how to build websites and how to create high quality content for marketing purposes. The whole thing was really inspired by the Greyston Foundation and Greyston Bakery, in particular, and they're kind of guiding motto is, "We don't hire people to make brownies. We make brownies to hire people." And, that's kind of the stance that I want to take with the Give Back Project, except of course, we're making websites.
The whole thing, every piece of the puzzle, Rock Your Genius, Upstart Smart, and the Give Back Project, I hope will help current and aspiring business owners in even the smallest ways, but hopefully in really big ways.

We also talked about Traci's take on the social networking aspect of things and how she's used sites like Twitter, Facebook, and MySpace to grow the network at The Mom Entrepreneur to over 1100 members. Stories of Inspiration
Mary Beth Wells of the Precious Baby Doll Company
Mary Beth told us about a company that started from her journey through adoption. She relinquished her own biological daughter when she was young, only to discover later on that she was unable to have any more children herself. She eventually went on to adopt two daughters from Guatemala, and from there, the circle of adoption was complete. After experiencing first hand the power of adoption, Mary Beth went on to create the Precious Baby Doll Company so that children could adopt baby dolls from around the world and learn the gift of adoption. She shared some of the challenges she's faced in getting a product off the ground, as well as some of her recent successes, including her landing her own radio show.
Friends in Business
Pearl Mattenson, Leadership and Relationship Coach
Pearl Mattenson, another of our "Friends in Business" who is a leadership and relationship coach, was on the show. Pearl and I had an opportunity to talk not long ago, and one of the things that really struck me about her success as an entrepreneur was the fact that she refuses to book herself solid. She explained how this actually helps her better serve her clients while maintaining her own balance between her personal space and the demands of her business.

Quote of the Week
The Price of Success
I think it's by Zig Ziglar. The price of success is much lower than the price of failure.
If you think it's a big risk to do what you love, start a business, call on that potential client, whatever the case, it's an even bigger risk not to do it. Be willing to put yourself out there.
Good luck with your business, and I'll see you back here next week.
